The town was named for the wife of the original merchandizer who settled the area. Alma is the highest incorporated town in the U.S.

Spanish for “good view” because of the spectacular mountain views to the west of town. Buena Vista is the gateway of whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River plus trailheads for climbing the many 14ers a short drive from town.

Lead and silver were the primary ores once mined in Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the U.S. To avoid confusion with all the towns named for silver, lead was chosen as the basis for the name of the village.

The origin of the town’s name means that silver mining claims would be given equitably, or fairly, in town rather than going to a select few as was happening in nearby towns. Fairplay offers direct access to the eastern slope of the Mosquito Mountain ridge, the longest, highest mountain ridge in the continental U.S.
